About Unit Conversion

Unit conversion is the process of expressing the same quantity in a different unit of measurement. The metric system (SI) uses base-10 prefixes β€” kilo (Γ—1000), centi (Γ·100), milli (Γ·1000) β€” making conversions straightforward. Imperial units (inches, feet, miles, pounds, gallons) have less consistent relationships and require fixed conversion factors.

Temperature is the only common unit with a non-multiplicative conversion: Celsius to Fahrenheit requires both multiplication and addition (Β°C Γ— 9/5 + 32). All other conversions in this tool are simple multiplication by a fixed factor. Everything runs locally in your browser β€” no data is sent anywhere.

How to Use

  1. Select a category (Length, Weight, Temperature, etc.) from the tabs.
  2. Choose the unit to convert from and the unit to convert to.
  3. Enter a value β€” the result updates instantly.
  4. Click ⇄ to swap the two units.

Frequently Asked Questions

The formula is Β°F = (Β°C Γ— 9/5) + 32. For example, 100Β°C = (100 Γ— 1.8) + 32 = 212Β°F. To go the other way: Β°C = (Β°F βˆ’ 32) Γ— 5/9. A useful mental shortcut: double the Celsius value and add 30 for a rough Fahrenheit estimate (20Β°C β†’ ~70Β°F).

1 mile = 1.60934 kilometres. A quick approximation is to multiply miles by 1.6 β€” it's accurate to within 0.4%. Going the other way, 1 km β‰ˆ 0.621 miles. If you're converting a long distance like 100 miles, that's approximately 161 km.
