How WPM is calculated
Words Per Minute (WPM) is calculated by dividing the number of correctly completed words by the elapsed time in minutes. A "word" is standardised as 5 characters — this is the industry convention, used by typing tests worldwide, because it makes WPM comparable across different passage lengths and word sizes. Raw WPM counts all typed words; net WPM subtracts uncorrected errors. This test reports net WPM.
Average typing speed for office workers is 40–55 WPM. Touch typists average 60–80 WPM. Professional typists, stenographers, and competitive typists reach 100–160+ WPM. The world record is over 200 WPM.
