What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. The core idea is simple: work in focused 25-minute sessions (called "pomodoros"), then take a short 5-minute break. After four pomodoros, take a longer 15โ€“30 minute break. This cycle helps maintain sustained concentration, reduces mental fatigue, and builds a natural rhythm of productive work and deliberate recovery.

Research supports the value of structured breaks for maintaining focus and avoiding burnout. This timer runs entirely in your browser tab โ€” no sign-up, no app install. Customise the session lengths to match your own focus style: some people prefer 50-minute focus blocks, others 15-minute sprints. The timer updates the browser tab title so you can track time while working in another tab.

How to Use

  1. Click โ–ถ Start to begin a 25-minute focus session.
  2. Work on a single task until the timer rings.
  3. The timer will automatically switch to a Short Break โ€” click โ–ถ again to start it.
  4. After 4 focus sessions the break switches to a Long Break automatically.
  5. Adjust the durations in the settings below the timer to match your preference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The timer runs on a JavaScript interval that continues even when the tab is in the background. The browser tab title also updates with the remaining time (e.g. "๐Ÿ… 23:45 โ€” Focus") so you can glance at it without switching back. Note that some browsers throttle background timers; if you notice drift over long sessions, keeping the tab visible avoids this.

25 minutes was Cirillo's original recommendation based on his personal experience, not scientific research. Many people find different durations work better for them โ€” programmers often prefer 50-minute sessions, while people doing creative work may find 15 minutes more realistic. You can change the focus, short break, and long break durations freely in the settings section below the timer. Changes take effect on the next session.

No. The timer runs entirely in your browser. No data is sent to any server. Session counts are kept only in memory and reset when you close or refresh the tab.
