About the Magic 8 Ball

The Magic 8 Ball is a classic novelty toy invented in 1950 by Albert Carter and Abe Bookman. Originally sold as the "Syco-Seer," it was later marketed as a pool-ball novelty toy. Inside the black ball is a 20-sided die floating in dark liquid, with a response on each face. When you shake it and turn it over, a window reveals one of 20 answers: 10 positive, 5 neutral, and 5 negative.

This digital version uses cryptographically random selection to pick from all 20 classic responses. The answers are colour-coded β€” green for positive, yellow for neutral, and red for negative. Your recent questions and answers are shown in the history panel. Despite its mystical presentation, the Magic 8 Ball is of course a random toy β€” perfect for making trivial decisions or just having fun.

Frequently Asked Questions

The classic Magic 8 Ball has exactly 20 responses: 10 positive (e.g. "It is certain," "Signs point to yes"), 5 neutral (e.g. "Reply hazy, try again," "Ask again later"), and 5 negative (e.g. "Don't count on it," "My reply is no"). This digital version includes all 20 original responses, colour-coded by type.

Yes β€” the answer is selected using crypto.getRandomValues(), the same cryptographic randomness used for security applications. Each of the 20 responses has exactly equal probability of appearing. The ball has no knowledge of your question and cannot actually predict anything β€” it is pure chance, just like the original toy.

No. Everything runs entirely in your browser. Your questions are never sent to any server, and the history only exists in memory while the tab is open.
