What does an IP address reveal?

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a numerical label assigned to every device connected to the internet. IP geolocation databases map IP address ranges to approximate physical locations and network information. This lookup shows the city, region, country, ISP (Internet Service Provider), ASN (Autonomous System Number), and timezone associated with an IP address.

Accuracy varies โ€” consumer ISPs typically resolve to within 50km, while mobile and satellite connections may be much less precise. VPNs and proxies will show the server location, not the user's location. Corporate networks often resolve to the company headquarters or data centre rather than the employee's physical location.

How to use

  1. Your own public IP address is looked up automatically when the page loads.
  2. To look up a different IP, type it into the input field and click Look up (or press Enter).
  3. Results show the approximate location, ISP, ASN, timezone, and other network details for that IP.
  4. Click ๐Ÿ“ View on map to see the approximate location in OpenStreetMap.
  5. Click Look up my IP instead to return to your own IP lookup.

Frequently Asked Questions

This tool uses the ipapi.co free tier API, which allows up to 1,000 lookups per day. It returns location, ISP, ASN, and timezone data for any public IPv4 or IPv6 address. Private IP addresses (e.g. 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x) cannot be looked up as they are not routable on the public internet.

IP geolocation is not GPS. ISPs often assign IPs from a regional pool โ€” your IP might be registered to a city 100km away. VPNs and proxies always show the server's location. Mobile networks frequently show the carrier's data centre. The country is usually accurate; city-level precision varies widely.

PocketTools does not log IP addresses you look up. The query is sent directly from your browser to the ipapi.co API โ€” PocketTools never sees or stores it. The ipapi.co service may log requests per their own privacy policy.
