Why Not Just Multiply by 7?
The "multiply by 7" rule is a popular myth, not based on biology. Dogs mature much faster in their early years — a 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human in maturity. After that, the rate slows and varies significantly by size. Larger dogs age faster than smaller ones: a 10-year-old Great Dane is elderly, while a 10-year-old Chihuahua might still be middle-aged. This calculator uses American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) guidelines adjusted by size category.
