About This Calculator

This calculator uses the US Navy body fat formula, which estimates body fat percentage from height and body circumference measurements. For men, it uses height, waist and neck. For women, it adds hip circumference. This method requires only a tape measure and is reasonably accurate (ยฑ3โ€“4%) compared to DEXA scans. Measure at the narrowest point for waist, and measure relaxed (not flexed) for neck and hips.

Category ranges used are based on the American Council on Exercise (ACE) guidelines. Essential fat is the minimum amount needed for basic physiological function. Athletes typically carry 6โ€“13% (men) or 14โ€“20% (women). Fitness range is healthy and active. Acceptable range is above fitness but not clinically overweight. Obese is above 25% (men) or 32% (women).
